A mixing hopper pump is a combination of the hopper and the centrifugal pump. Between them, there is the venturi educator, the valve, the nozzle. On the pump, the output is connected with the educator inlet port by the flange. While the hopper discharge port is connected with the center inlet of the educator. Based on the pressure discharge and centrifugal pump function, drilling mud material will be compounded well with drilling liquid.

Mud hopper pump capacity is defined by mud hopper size and pump. For example, the hopper including a 4'' or 6'' port one. And the diameter is 400mm-700mm. The normal type for mixing hopper, includes APSB8X6, APSB6X5, and APSB5x4 driven by 75HP, 50HP, 30HP motor. The flow rate is about 400-1200GPM. To select a proper mixing pump, please consider the flow rate of the whole mud system. Almost of clients prefer the Venturi hopper to the swirl hopper because of its high capacity and dust-free design. Furthermore, the Venturi hopper is more compact than swirl hopper
Different configurations on mud mixing pumps. In almost a mud system, the mixing hopper pump is set at the end of the mud tank. They are an assembly of hopper, pump, skid. In some systems, there is 2 complete set of mixing pumps. That means 2 hoppers and 2 centrifugal pumps. Some clients, they prefer the separated mixing skid in a frame. The hopper can be in a separated frame or just a single hopper connected with all lines input and discharge. The pipings connected with the mixing pump including the input line, discharge line, fit with the T port for convenient mud transfer among tanks and compartments.
Venturi or swirl hopper with a centrifugal pump is also referred to as a jet mud mixer or mixing hopper pump. It's a combination of a hopper and a centrifugal pump. The hopper type can be Venturi or swirl type. The mixing pump is widely used in the oil and gas drilling fluids process. It is used to compound new drilling fluids and mix the active mud when necessary. For some civil construction applications, the mud mixing pump is widely used for bentonite mixing, too. Compared to mud agitators, the mixing pump can mix the fluids through the whole mud system by connected lines and transfer compounded mud to any tank or compartment.
In some mud system, the mud mixer is fit as integration on the mud tank skid. Some of them will be fit as a separated pump and hopper. Some hoppers are set on a tank top and connected with a pump by the pipe. While the other mixing pumps are an assembly of pump and hopper on a separated base set beside the mud tank. Different configuration meets the different requirements or demands of users. But the final result and effect are the same. They need to produce new proper drilling fluids or drilling mud.
It's depending on the mudflow rate of the whole system. And the mixing pump can be assembled with the shearing pump we call it a jet shearing pump. Furthermore, different users prefer different configurations on the mud system. The mixing pump skid can be fit only one mixing hopper pump or 2 sets of mixing hopper pumps. And usually, the 2 sets of mixing pumps work simultaneously for sufficient fluids productivity.
Besides the oil well drilling, the mud mixing pump is widely used in the HDD mud recycling system. The difference is usually the HDD mud mixing pump smaller than the oil drilling one.
